Social media is an ever-evolving business. One day images should be ‘this size’ and the next day they’ve changed. Keeping track of those changes is a full-time business. We’ll do our best to keep this page up-to-date. So perhaps you should go ahead and pin it now —>
The ten tips we’ve listed should help your blog get on the Pinterest map. Our tips include help for images, descriptions, creating a brand, buttons and more.
We haven’t covered rich pins in this post. However, we’ll do a separate post for them soon. When we post it, I’ll update this post. If you don’t know what rich pins are, let’s just say they are the bees knees!
We’ve done our best to be as detailed as possible but if anything is unclear, we’d love to hear from you.

PINTEREST TIPS & TRICKS: 1. Label Your Images
This is the easiest step to take that will help your pins be found. Make the name of your image something that reflects what the image contains. For example, I have renamed all the images for my Country Fried Steak to reflect what is in the image. This looks better than “GEDC1234.JPG”
To rename a file in Windows: Right click on the file name and choose “Rename”. Type a new name for the item. Press Return.
To rename a file on a Mac: Select the item you want to rename and press Return. Type a new name for the item. Press Return.
PINTEREST TIPS & TRICKS: 2. Create the Pin’s Description
Have you ever pinned an image only to discover that the description reads “betty’s awesome cake”. That’s not really helpful. The blog owner needs to set the title of the image tag.
Here is an example:

If you hover over the following image, you will see the description I embedded in the title attribute. If you click on the “Pin It” button, that description will show up.
It is recommended that your description be between 200 and 300 characters long. Descriptions of these lengths seem to get the most pins and repins. Dan Zarella was kind enough to share this data about Pinterest.
The maximum length of any description is 500 characters. Use our Word & Character Counter to help type your description.
PINTEREST TIPS & TRICKS: 3. Add Your Logo or Watermark
Brand your images! This is an easy way to help retain ownership of your photos and promote your website, blog or business. However, there is a right way and a wrong way. Please see the photos below.

You lose an excellent opportunity to have your “brand” visible.||BETTER: Pinterest Image with Large Watermark – Visitors and pinners can easily identify your “brand”. Your images are very protected from manipulation & theft. However, the first thing you notice is the logo. You have to adjust your eyes to see the picture.||BEST: Pinterest Image with Discreet Watermark – Visitors and pinners can identify your “brand”. Your image can still be manipulated but thieves will have to work at it.|
PINTEREST TIPS & TRICKS: 4. Choose the Right Image Size
Pinterest uses a bulletin board style layout. Images and descriptions are lined up together in a creative way. Portrait styled images display and gather better attention than square and landscape.
Image size guidelines are as follows:
Expanded & Search Views – Maximum width of 238 x proportional height
Individual/Expanded Pins – Maximum width of 736 pixels x proportional height
Board Cover – 217 x 146 pixels
Profile Images – 165 x 165 pixels
PINTEREST TIPS & TRICKS: 5. Get Verified
Verifying your website on Pinterest lets your visitors know that the account on Pinterest is truly associated with your blog. The verification will show your website with a check mark next it’s name on your page.

PINTEREST TIPS & TRICKS: 6. Set Your Bio
Be certain to set your bio on your page. This is a prime place to let people know what your blog is about. Be fun, creative and unique. Don’t forget to use keywords. Your bio is limited to 160 characters. Use our Word & Character Counter to help type your bio.
To add a bio to your page, click on the settings gear, select “Edit Profile”, enter your profile in the “About You” box and click “Save Profile”.
PINTEREST TIPS & TRICKS: 7. Set The Description of Each Board
Pinterest gives you the ability to describe each board you have. It is especially wise to set the description of any board that is specific to your website. Pinterest limits your description to 500 characters. Use our Word & Character Counter to help type your description.
To edit the description of any of your boards, go to that board, click on “Edit Board”, enter a description into the box and click “Save Changes”.
PINTEREST TIPS & TRICKS: 8. Link Your Social Media Accounts
Pinterest allows you to link your Facebook, Twitter and Google+ accounts with it. It will display your Facebook and Twitter accounts on your page. You also have the ability to cross-post to Facebook and Twitter when you create a new pin.
To link your accounts, click on the settings gear, choose “Account Settings”, select “Social Networks”, enter your information and click “Save Settings”.
PINTEREST TIPS & TRICKS: 9. Add the Follow Me Button to Your Blog
Be certain to add a “Follow Me on Pinterest” type of button on your blog somewhere. You can add one that matches your blog’s style. Ours is in the upper right-hand corner. If you click on it, it will take you directly to our Pinterest page: http://pinterest.com/Huddlenet. There are any number of icons on the internet for you to use.

PINTEREST TIPS & TRICKS: 10. Add the Pin It Button to Your Posts.
The easier you make it for your visitors to pin your images, the more likely they are to do it. There are a couple of way to accomplish this.
- Use Pinterest’s official Pin It Widget. You can choose whether to pin a certain image, any image or a hover over image button. You will need to add the script to every post you want to add the pin it button.
- If you are using WordPress, there are any number of plugins that will do this for you. This is the official plugin: Pinterest Pin It Hover Button. The plugin that we us on Huddlenet is jQuery Pin It Button For Images. It has a a lot of features that we enjoy. You can use your own hover button, choose where the description is taken from, choose which images should have the button and shouldn’t and more.
